Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychological therapy that works with distressing memories and the feelings or beliefs connected with them. It is an established treatment option for PTSD. Whether it is appropriate for other concerns depends on your experiences, goals and individual assessment.
Who might consider EMDR?
You might be seeking support for memories that still feel upsetting, reminders that bring on strong reactions, or beliefs about yourself that feel difficult to shift. These experiences may overlap with trauma and PTSD. You do not need to decide on a treatment before making contact.
What to expect from EMDR sessions
We begin by exploring what is bringing you to therapy, your current circumstances and the support you need. Preparation may include ways to manage distress and feel more grounded. Memory processing is considered when appropriate, rather than being an automatic part of your first appointment.
During processing, you may be invited to focus briefly on aspects of a memory while using guided eye movements or another form of bilateral stimulation. We review your responses and adapt the pace together. You can ask questions, request a pause and discuss alternatives throughout therapy.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to describe every detail of a memory?
EMDR does not necessarily require a detailed account of every aspect of an experience. We discuss what information is needed to work safely and how to approach difficult material at a manageable pace.
Will we start memory processing in the first session?
Not necessarily. Initial sessions focus on assessment, understanding your goals and preparation. The timing of processing depends on what is appropriate for you.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number that suits everyone. Your circumstances, goals and responses to therapy guide the plan, and we review progress together.
Can EMDR be considered via telehealth?
EMDR may be considered online after discussing suitability, privacy, your environment and the support available to you. Enquire so we can explore the options for your circumstances.
